Why therapy in your own language matters
You might get by perfectly well in Spanish at work, at the supermarket or with friends. Talking about how you really feel is something else. Emotions tend to live in the language you grew up with, and searching for the right word in your second language can put distance between you and what you're trying to say.
With Sofía, the whole session is in English, from the first hello to the last question. If you'd like to switch to Spanish at some point, or mix the two, that's fine too.

How sessions work
Your first appointment is a 30-minute pre-assessment
It's a first point of contact to see which kind of therapy will help you most.
Her approach
Sofía uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). It looks at how your thoughts, feelings and actions affect each other, focuses on what's happening now and gives you practical tools to use between sessions.
The practical side.

Settling into life in Madrid
Moving to a new country is exciting, and it's also a lot. New job, new language, new rules for everything from renting a flat to booking a doctor's appointment. Many people expect to feel at home within a few months and are surprised when it takes much longer.
These are some of the things people often bring to therapy after moving here.
- Feeling lonely, even when you're busy and surrounded by people.
- Missing home, and feeling guilty about missing it.
- Pressure at work in a culture that runs on a different clock.
- A relationship where one of you moved for the other, or where you come from different cultures.
- Not knowing whether to stay, or when it's time to go back.
Sofía pays close attention to each person's family, social and cultural background, which matters when you're living between two worlds. If a big change has left you feeling unsettled, you can also read about adjustment and life changes (in Spanish).

Frequently asked questions
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes. What you say in session stays between you and Sofía, and your health data is protected under Spanish and EU law. The only exceptions are rare and serious, such as a risk to your life or someone else's, and Sofía will explain them at your first session.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. You can book directly. If you're already seeing a doctor or taking medication, just mention it at your first session.
Can we mix Spanish and English?
Of course. Some people prefer English for everything; others switch depending on the topic. Whatever feels most natural to you.
How do I get to the clinic?
